Topic 4 - Culture

All of you have come from a different culture to the United States.  Some of you have lived in or traveled to other countries besides the U.S.  What are some things that have surprised you about cultures different from your own?  What are some things you appreciate and wish your country or culture can learn?  What are things that you have experienced that have disappointed you?

When I traveled to Hong Kong, Taiwan (Taipei), and Europe, I was very impressed with these countries' public transportation system.  Their subways, buses, and taxis are clean, fast, safe, and efficient. I think Los Angeles still has a long way to go to improve its public transportation.

When I traveled to Europe recently, I was very surprised at how common it is for Europeans to know three or four different languages.  The owner of an apartment we stayed in was fluent in French, Italian, and English.  Many people from China have immigrated to Europe.  At one restaurant, I noticed two Chinese girls working behind the counter.  They spoke to each other in Chinese.  Then they spoke to the manager in Italian.  Then they turned around and spoke to me in English!  In America, the minimum foreign language required in high school is two years.  That is hardly enough to hold a conversation beyond, "How are you?" I think Americans should really learn more foreign languages to communicate with our neighbors around the world.

When I visited China and the Philippines, I was disappointed with their lack of regard for the environment.  People threw trash everywhere and did not try to enforce pollution control.  In America, many people are concerned about preserving the environment.  We have regular smog checks for our cars and we set aside parks and green open spaces for people's physical and mental health.  Hopefully, other countries can follow America's example in this area. :)

Topic 3 - Family

In what ways are you similar to your mom and in what ways are you similar to your dad?
In appearance, most people say I look like my dad and his mother (my paternal grandmother).  They say my eyes and smile remind them of my father.  In personality, I can say that I have traits from both my mother and my father.  My mother is very careful, detail-oriented, and organized.  I think I inherited these traits from her.  However, my mom is also very cautious and doesn't like to try new things.  I am not like her in this area.  My dad is more active, adventurous and handy.  He has always liked to hike, jog, and swim.  Even at 82 years old, he still jogs in the park almost every evening! When we went on family vacations, he would always want to visit everything he possibly could in the area.  He is also very handy.  If anything is broken he always wants to try to fix it himself first before calling a repairman.  I also like to exercise when I can.  I love to visit new places and try new food.  Sometimes I can fix something by myself, but my dad is much more skilled than I am.  My dad, unfortunately, has many food allergies.  I'm glad I'm not like him in this area!  I enjoy eating a variety of food.

If you have children, in what ways are they like you?
Of my three children, I think my middle daughter is most like me.  She is very organized, logical, and disciplined.  Her skin is also similar to mine.  She tends to get freckles easily and has to be careful of the sun. My oldest and youngest daughters are more carefree and careless. They prefer creativity to structure.  They are similar to some members on my husband's side of the family.

Topic 2 - Career

For your second post (Topic 2), please share about your career.  If you have never worked or have not yet achieved your dream job, write about the job you would like to have and why you are interested in it.  If you have worked before, write about your most interesting job.  Who or what influenced you to take this job?  What were your responsibilities?  What did you learn from it?  How did you grow as a person as a result of having had this job?  Why was this job interesting or why did you did you enjoy it?  What were some aspects of your work that you did not like?

Although I've had a few office jobs, my primary career has been in teaching ESL.  As I mentioned in my first post, I really enjoy teaching ESL because I can meet people from all over the world.  It is so fascinating to me to learn about different people, languages, and cultures.  Currently in our summer class, we have students from China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Cambodia, Egypt, Guatemala, and El Salvador.  That is amazing!  The whole world comes to my classroom!!!  The only aspects I don't like about teaching are having to correct homework and having to prevent cheating, and arguing with students about grades.

Topic 1 - Getting to Know Each Other

Hello Class,

Welcome to Advanced Reading & Writing Summer 2016! I am happy to teach you this month! In our class blog, I hope we can share about ourselves and to get to know each other better.  This is a fun form of communication and expression and I hope you will all enjoy it.

For each post, write Topic and the corresponding number. Then you can write a title to your post. For the first blog blog, please share a little about yourself.  Tell me about your family, your work, your interests or hobbies, and where you came from.  In addition, share something that most people do not know about you.

As for myself, I have been teaching ESL for over 10 years.  I enjoy meeting people from all over the world and learning about their cultures.  I have 3 daughters, ages 24, 21, and 17, and I have been married for 26 years.  My family came from China about 60 years ago. My parents came here in the mid 1950's to study for their university degrees.  They met and married in New York.  My brother and I were both born in the U.S., and likewise, our children were also born here, making them third generation Chinese-Americans.  I have lived in Los Angeles/Orange County all of my life.  In my spare time, I like to do things with my hands, such as gardening, painting, fixing things, or other craft making.  What most people do not know about me is that I am very flexible and I can do the splits!  :)

I look forward to finding out about you!  Happy blogging!!

Sincerely,

Teacher Rita
